From christine at nccumc.org Fri Dec 14 17:15:58 2007 From: christine at nccumc.org (Christine Dodson) Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2007 17:15:58 -0500 Subject: [LCFinance] IRA Charitable Rollovers Message-ID: Below is some information for you on a giving opportunity for your church members on how they can give money directly to you from a required distribution from an IRA. This is to expire at the end of 2007 so we wanted to alert you in case you have anyone in your church who could benefit from this - and benefit your church from this too! Jim Mentzer in the United Methodist Foundation wrote this article and can give you specific guidance if you have questions. His contact information is listed in the article. Christine Last Call for IRA Charitable Rollovers If you are older than age 70?, and own an IRA retirement account, then now is the time to act on a special charitable opportunity. From now until December 31, 2007, you will have the opportunity to give up to $100,000 directly from an IRA to a qualified charity, such as your local United Methodist church. Or, you might prefer to place your endowment gift through United Methodist Foundation for the benefit a special ministry within the North Carolina Conference connection. How does this work? Actually, it's fairly simple. This program allows a person already taking required minimum distributions from an IRA to give some (or all) of those dollars to a qualified charitable organization without having the distribution count as income for 2007. This means that a charitable gift can be made without having to itemize deductions. Moreover, the reduction in taxable income may mean that one's Social Security benefit will not be taxed as heavily as might otherwise be the case. And, this type of charitable gift will satisfy the IRS Required Minimum Distribution on IRAs. Here are a few "fine points" about this charitable strategy: * Gifts may be made from traditional and Roth IRAs only; * Nobody under the age of 70 1/2 can take advantage of this option; * The money must come out of the IRA directly to the charity; * The donor cannot receive any benefit from the charity because of the gift. To find out if this special charitable gift program might be right for you, talk with your financial or tax advisers today. Or, contact Rev. Jim Mentzer at United Methodist Foundation (919-836-0029) for more information. Remember - this year's transfer must be completed prior to December 31, 2007 - act today! Apparently there is a rash of this type of theft (they sell the platinum, which is very expensive) so you might want to make your trustees be aware. Most of the repair cost was paid by the insurance company. Can we claim the entire amount of sales tax on the bill for refund?
